Once I contact your company, who will handle the arrangements?
We have highly-trained, compassionate coordinators ready to assist you with every aspect of the process.
Who will perform the service?
We have developed a national network of US Coast Guard licensed captains who will be in charge of the vessel and are responsible for the proper fulfillment of your exact wishes.
Can I attend the service?
Yes. The Captain will allow up to 6 additional passengers (including a clergy member, if you choose). Please keep in mind that Burials at Sea does not handle travel arrangements for attendees.
Do I have to attend the service?
No, your presence is not required. The Captain will perform the service according to your wishes, and you will receive a certificate from us when it has been completed.
Can I make arrangements for a member of the clergy to attend?
Yes. Once you are assigned to a Captain, he will contact a member of the clergy and inform you of any additional details or charges.
Once the service is completed, will I receive any documentation?
Captains will issue a certificate stating the date and exact location of the service. This will be signed and mailed back to our office. We will forward the certificate to your attention.
Can Burials at Sea Montauk, NY arrange to have this service performed anywhere in the coastal United States?
Yes. We have thousands of US Coast Guard licensed Captains under contract, and they are located in all coastal areas of the US.
Are there any restrictions to the exact location of the service?
The Environmental Protection Agency has set forth guidelines that must be adhered to nationally. These generally include the minimum acceptable location the service may be performed in relationship to the coastline. Specific EPA guidelines can be found here.
What happens during the winter months on the Eastern Coast of the country?
Several of our captains keep their vessels in the water for the winter and we will try and accommodate your request.
How do I pay for the service?
Once you have spoken with a coordinator about your wishes, you will be assigned to a Captain. You will be provided with the Captain’s name, address and phone number. You may contact the Captain directly to discuss details of handling transport for your loved one’s remains. After your plans are finalized, our coordinator will provide you with a detailed report of charges, and we accept MasterCard, Visa and Discover as payment.
What are the requirements for transporting my loved one’s remains?
Your funeral director can review options with you, as they vary. You may choose to have the remains placed in an urn, or in another container of your choosing. Bio-degradable containers are acceptable, but not required. When you receive the package from your funeral director, you will be responsible for sending that package to your Captain.
